Effects of the Occupational Therapy Using the Music-Based Cognitive Stimulation Digital Device Program on Elderly¡¯s Cognitive Function, Depression and Hand Function

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to find the influence of the occupational therapy that uses a music-based cognitive stimulation digital device on normal elderly¡¯s cognitive function, depression and hand function.

Methods : From May to July 2019, the intervention was carried out twice a week for a total of 10 sessions and 60 minutes per session for five weeks. The experimental group(n=14) participated in the occupational therapy using the music-based cognitive stimulation digital device program. And, the control group(n=12) participated in a program offered by a welfare center. To analyze the impact of an intervention program, cognitive, depression, and hand function were pre- and post-tested.

Results : For the experimental group, the 3.36 points of total score was improved, but, for the control group, 0.39 points was decreased, which indicates that the occupational therapy using the music-based cognitive digital device program affect the positive improvement on the cognitive function. And, the program improved depression and hand function significantly.

Conclusion : The occupational therapy using the music-based cognitive stimulation digital device program have positive influence on the improvement of cognitive function, depression and hand function of elderly aged 65 or older. Furthermore, it suggests that these occupational therapies can be used as one approach to programs to improve risk factors for preventing dementia.
